New York has a new problem...

« on: July 08, 2010, 03:12:37 PM »

come on that movie was great!
Dennis Hopper's performance was EPIC! "I'M THE LORD OF THE HARVEST!"
Chop Top was awesome and funny, in a weird way
Stretch was HOT!
Tom Savini did the effects
It wasn't a wannbe of the first, like 3 and 4, it took a completey differnt direction in a great way

Who said that they hated TCM 2? I'm a fan of this one and while it may be over-the-top I enjoy this film on it's own merits. I especially loved the character of Choptop, and it was a nice surprise to see that the Hitchhiker from the original is in it..well as a corpse named Nubbins but nonetheless it was cool to see that they kept the continuity of the character. Dennis Hopper was a great addition to this movie, and his performance was also over-the-top but it was cool to see that they made him the avenger of his brother Franklin from the first one.

There are a lot of memorable scenes in this film and I loved the beginning scene on the bridge with the song No One Lives Forever by Oingo Boingo, great intro. Although Part III completely disregards this movie as being Non-Cannon it is still a fun watch. It's undoubtedly different in tone from the original but that is to be expected..it was the 80's afterall.

I thought it was awful. I refuse to watch it again to give more specific details. But I do have this OLD review I wrote back in 2001 and I barely remember it from memory.

Quote
My Review:  I never liked the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so I was a little worried when I picked this movie off the shelf and decided to watch it. The beginning of this movie actually isn't boring at all, its actually more interesting then the first film. (Then again there are many followers of this series, and I just can't seem to stand the film - possibly all of them)

Thankfully the film has a new setting, at least that's that I thought in the beginning. But as the movie went on, I was hoping to get out of the radio station setting, and get back into the crazy isolated house. Sure there were moments in the radio station that were kinda JUMPY, such as when leatherface decides to make his presence known, I knew he was there somewhere, just wasn't expecting him to pop out when he did. Which is good, I wasn't expecting it then at all.

One of the reason's why I hated the first film was because it took forever to get to the point of the movie. I understand it was a set up to get to know the teens and whatnot, but please, hurry the hell up....anyhow, the beginning of this movie was good, it got right to the point. Sure those two guys in the beginning aren't explored at all, but they are just there to set up the rest of the movie. Which works.

Once the attack begins at the radio station Leatherface just seems really stupid. He's got a girl right there that he can kill, yet he's going around destroying the radio station, what the hell is up with that? It seems to me like leatherface wants to screw Stretch! He's using his chainsaw as though he's having sex (thrusting the chainsaw down next to his groin, after he rubs the chainsaw along Stretch's legs, and around her crotch), and then he just runs away from her, letting her go. And later on he even kisses her!

Maybe I wasn't paying any attention during the first one, or maybe it wasn't mentioned, but is Leatherface a retard or something? What was up with him putting that newly fresh cut face on Stretch and having her dance with him? I thought this was a horror movie, not a romantic comedy. And what the heck is up with the silly double chainsaw Dennis Hopper? Ridiculous if you ask me. And the guy who's half skinned? He doesn't even seem like he's in pain at all, he just seems a little out of it.

I know the family is supposed to be insane, but are they really supposed to be so stupidly insane, not funny nor scary at all. At least in the first film, there was a little fear there. Now its just plain old comedy.

Instead of rushing to get to the family and kill them all, Lefty walks slowly around, using his chainsaw on different things around the place. Shouldn't he be trying to get to leatherface, and to Stretch?

Grampa is so fucking old, he can't hold anything without dropping it, so why the fuck are they allowing him to be the one to hit the victims on the head? You think they would have learned their lesson by now, and would have appointed someone else to do the job.

Gore: Good death scene in the beginning of the film, nice and bloody. Another scene with the victim getting their head bashed in. Nice pile of guts and other bloody pieces that are unidentifiable. Leatherface skins someone, and hangs the skin up to dry. The chainsaw in the groin must have hurt.

Character Development: Not too much of a development with anyone in the film other then Lefty, who we know is somehow related to the kids from the first film. It wasn't made that much of a big deal out of, but I think he is supposed to be their uncle.

Sexual Content: Nothing. Oh wait, there is the scene where Leatherface is caressing Stretch's legs and crotch with the chainsaw, does that count?

Acting: For a crappy storyline you'd figure the acting would suck as well. But I was very surprised at how well all the cast did. I really loved Caroline Williams (Stretch), and I thought she did a wonderful job. I'd like to see her in another horror movie. I think one of the main reasons that some of the acting lacked being awesome was just because the script stunk.

Overall: I gave the movie 1.5, the extra 1/2 because the beginning of the movie actually wasn't too bad. But I found myself falling asleep throughout the film. I don't see how anyone would like this movie. It totally makes fun of leatherface, and makes him way too human. He isn't scary, and he isn't insane. Bad movie, and I recommend people staying away from it, unless of course its on TV and you feel like wasting two hours.

I think you have it perfectly nailed down Kat but it isn't a film to take seriously at all. It's a fun little horror film, ridiculous? yes, stupid? yes, but for me it was really entertaining. You say that you aren't a fan of the original and I love the original. Part of the reason the original was slow as hell was a sign of the times, hippy era. A lot of movies back then took a long time to get to main focus of the movie. In the original the family lived inside of the farmhouse in an isolated countryside, here they live underground underneath an amusement park..that alone should drive the point as to what kind of movie this is. I can understand why they flat out removed this film from the series timeline and reinvented a sequel with Part III. The 3rd entry in the series is more serious in tone, and graphic violence, nor is it as slapstick as this one.

That aside, there's plenty to laugh about and enjoy with this film. It definitely paved the way for Bill Moseley's career, hell who knows where he would be today if he hadn't taken the role of Choptop. Everyone isn't a huge fan of every movie in existence, if that were the case then everything would be run like a dictatorship. So it's refreshing to hear someone else's opinion on a film, some love it, some hate it, and some are just meh about it.

Besides, Would a horror movie take itself seriously when the poster is a carbon copy of the Breakfast Club poses? That alone should prove that it isn't intended to be serious.

Haha didn't notice the poster ever. I've only seen the cover with Dennis on it.

When I saw this back then I was expecting it to be a good serious slasher.

To be honest I prefer the remake over the original and sequel. I did however enjoy TCM 3
