Beyond which, hasn't it been "explained" already? Unlike with Michael and Leatherface, there's absolutely nothing about his past we don't already know.

Do you know why Jason keeps coming back from the dead? Or how? That's something us fans can only guess about, wouldn't you agree?!
Um, nooooooo.  The moment he was struck by lightning in part 6, he became inhuman, an unstoppable walking corpse bent on continuing his vengeance upon helpless campers.  There's no guessing to it.

What other explanation would you need beyond him being undead?  That's like asking for a more thorough explanation as to why Superman flies.

There is something you guys need to understand about storytelling.  Thorough exposition STOPS the story from unfolding.  It stops the movie right on it's tracks.  That is why filmmakers rely on minimal exposition and "visual" storytelling to get the point across.  Use your common sense to figure things out.  Put story elements together.

You want some bookworm popping out of nowhere explaining every detail as to why Jason is unstoppable?  The one continuing failure with these slasher film remakes and remakes all together, is over-explaining.

You take away their mystique by doing that.  You end up getting to know this villain as if he's your best friend.  It takes the fear factor away from them.

They should keep these things subtle and ambiguous.  That generates the fear of the unknown, and thus makes the villain all the more legendary and above all else FRIGHTENING.

Just have to accept that we weren't put on this Earth to "get it", especially about the supernatural and the paranormal.

Exactly. Think of the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars: the former basically died out a few years ago because of an overreliance on "technobabble" and exposition at the expense of cinematic quality, whereas the latter, which doesn't even attempt to explain things beyond "lole The Force", is still going strong.

will both explore Jason's origins and get him into the hockey mask he didn't don until the third in Paramount's original film series.
God no!!!!! The only thing about his origin that I would find interesting is maybe something to do with the Voorhees' family's connection with black magic. That could explain Jason returning after drowning years before and pulling Alice underwater from her canoe. Other than that, we can pretty much figure out that Alice killing his mother is what set things off. We know he got the mask from Shelly in Pt. 3 so there's no need to try to make up any sort of background story because there isn't any. He killed him and took his mask. Plain and simple!!! The way they did it in the Halloween remake worked (even though I wasn't crazy about the movie) for that particular film but will not for F13.
As of right now, if this film is made I will not go to see it.

The 'remake' will depend on the people writing the story line, unfortunately what we as fans would like to see is probably not what the film company will see making money, in my mind it has to be dark and unforgiving, no remorse for any of the voorhees family and it could have the potential of shocking audiences again, when the first movie came out it was ground breaking and truly scary for the then relatively innocent general public.
If they are careful and give it time and thought and not think about how much money it can make but rather how loud they can make people scream out then maybe we will get the Friday movie that should be made but I wouldn't hold your breath, i have put my idea for a remake in the section for remake ideas, go read and see what you think Wink

Well, here is some news, right from BD:

Quote
We were the first to announce the remake of Friday the 13th, the first to reveal the director and now we've got a complete casting breakdown for you! The breakdown (obviously) contains major spoilers from Damian Shannon and Mark Swift's screenplay, so make sure you want to know the fate of some characters before you read on. The remake being helmed by Marcus Nispel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) shoots February 11 in Austin, Texas. The remake will focus on Jason Voorhees -- who will wear the infamous mask and kill -- and keep the famous setting of Crystal Lake.

The rest will be placed in Spoiler Code:

Spoiler (hover to show)

Is it just me...or do most of these characters seem like they'd be annoying? We will have to wait and see who they cast..

The only thing I'm greatful for is the fact that it is being done by the same guy that did the TCM remake, because to me that wasn't really a "remake" so I'm hoping that with this film it won't really BE a "remake"

LOL how was the TCM remake not really a remake, I mean it was a retelling of the original with some new elements and such, maybe you could lablel it that new fangled word in Hollywood, "reimagining" but it was just as much a remake to me as Halloween or Dawn of the Dead or whatever. If it wasn't 100% original and mostly based on a previous movie then really it is just them "remaking" the earlier said film heh.

It can't be a remake if the killer isn't Pamela Voorhees, if it's Jason then I consider it another sequel.

News on Friday the 13 remake from Filmjunk:

"Now it looks like the remake is finally back on track, with a new director in negotiations. Unfortunately, it’s Marcus Nispel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Pathfinder) not someone I hold in a particularly high regard, although he may turn out to be an improvement on Liebesman. Production is expected to begin this winter, possibly with a release date of mid-2008 in mind."

Fuck.

Fuck.

Fuck.

I guess this means good-bye to the old continuity. Sad

Yeah I know what you mean. It means the end of the Jason we have watched for so many years. Love em or hate em he has been a big part of many, hell I know my life and even if all the films were not up to snuff at least it was always the same guy ya know? You could make all the films work in terms of where they took place.

Now we will have a "new" Jason with a new story, he will be hailed and welcomed by many, but I think the day this comes out will be the day many true Friday fans truly lay Jason Voorhees to rest, because the historic icon we have loved for decades will never be seen again, replaced by a newer, more hip version for the new gen kiddies to gobble up and love...just like we did once ourselves.

I mean I know that any new Jason movies that could have been made in the old line may have been less than stellar ( I blame Hollywood on that) and would have even had a hard time getting made (No one wanted to touch after Jason X, and to a degree after FVJ...) but still, that was the Jason I grew up on and I really am sad to see that he has finally been truly defeated by his one and only weakness...a movie company bent on making a remake.

If it wasn't 100% original and mostly based on a previous movie then really it is just them "remaking" the earlier said film heh.

Well, most of the TCM films didn't touch on the background of Leatherface if I recall correctly...neither did the "remake" it could have been part of the series, it didn't remake any of the characters nor a lot of the scenes - it wasn't a scene for scene remake....therefore in my opinion, its not a remake. Sure, its called that, but it could easily be placed somewhere in the TCM series if you wanted to place it there.

Not to mention, I never found Leatherface "scary". He was a bit more in the original, but became funny in the sequels...if they can make Jason scary again like they did with Leatherface in TCM, that would be cool. Would it be worth it? I'm not sure yet...probably not though...

So...I am hoping that they are going to 'remake' it like TCM was.

Then again, this guy is only the director, so, who knows if it can be improved at all...I mean this is coming from the duo who wrote FvsJ, which I didn't really enjoy - can I blame that on the script? Partly, but there were a lot of things wrong with that movie.

Some more news has been released, I found this on BD:

Quote
Ever since Marcus Nispel was announced to remake Friday the 13th for New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures and MTV, news has been flooding on the web. Today the biggest of news hit over at CHUD where they revealed the entire opening sequence of the film, which we have confirmed as authentic. In the remake, which hits theaters February 13, 2009, Jason Voorhees will rock his mask and kill in a modern "companion piece."

On the CHUD website:

Quote
Remaking Friday the 13th is actually more complicated than you might think. After all, there's no Jason Voorhees in the first film - his mom is the killer. And there's no hockey mask until Part III. It took until Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter for the classic Jason look and mythology to be really finalized. So what do you do when attempting to make a 21st century version? Do you really remake the first, with Mrs. Voorhees as the killer? How do you deal with the now cliched aspects of the slasher genre? Do you even need to bring back any elements from the original films, or do you just do a reboot?

I talked about this with the Platinum Dunes guys, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, last year when they were promoting The Hitcher. They were still working these issues out, but with the movie shooting in February, they've obviously hammered them out.

And I know how.

The new Friday the 13th is going to open with Jason as a legend in the Crystal Lake area.
Spoiler (hover to show)

This sounds like a terrific way to revive the series. We get right to the point, and it opens damn strong. From there the movie essentially becomes a rehash of the first four movies, but who is going to complain about that? One of the big changes is that the script attempts to explain some of Jason's supernatural aspects - the script goes out of its way to specify that he's a human being, not a zombie or a superman - including revealing that our favorite hockey masked killer has
Spoiler (hover to show)

As a die-hard fan of the series, I have to say that I like what I am hearing. Friday the 13th was never great cinema, and the sequels bastardized the concept worse than Platinum Dunes could ever hope to do.

Maybe I didn't realize this before...but MTV? Um..I don't think I've ever seen a GOOD movie when they were involved...and I'm not sure I like the sound of:

Spoiler (hover to show)

But, pretty much a rehash of the first 4 films? That statement right there could be a good thing...we'll have to wait and see.
