As a kid my parents let me rent whatever I wanted, from as far back as I can remember. So of course I spent most of my time in the horror section. I was probably 7 or 8 when I saw my first Friday the 13th movie.

Now I've got a nephew & niece, currently 7 & 10yrs old. Their father is a fanatic over the Halloween series (not so much F13, but I forgive him), so he was cool with me introducing them to the loveliness of Jason Voorhees. They both found the movies to be quite a bit of goofy & gory fun. In fact my niece just recently, without any encouragement, rummaged through my collection and watched 4 separate entries of the series all in a row, sitting all by herself. Because she's awesome.

Have any of you gone out of the way to do the same for youngin' relatives or whatnot? Did/do you hold any "moral" reservations over the idea? Preferring instead to wait until they reach an age that you deem more 'appropriate'? In general do you have any personal rules regarding the notion?

I'm fortunate that my youngin' relatives are quite smart, my nephew LOVES Kill Bill and my niece ADORES Day of the Dead.

My nieces and nephew I tried to get into horror. My nephew loves it, my niece not so much. I'm upset though because they saw FvsJ without me, as their first movie. I wanted to show them the movie in order. I think it was a few months ago (hell maybe last summer at this point) we watched F13th 1-8. They saw the remake, and stupid me TOTALLY forgot the killer cut had more sex and stuff in it. We were all mortified watching it together lol. They liked the movies though. I've also had one niece watch the Halloweens. They've also seen all the Screams with me recently, and my husband and I took them to see Scream 4 in the theater. They are currently 15 & 12, but their bdays are in two months.

I honestly think showing horror movies to kids really depends on the kid. Some are frightened way too much by things like that, where others aren't. My oldest niece is now 21, but she was VERY terrified by horror movies when she was a kid, so we couldn't show her ANYTHING without her seriously scaring herself SICK. She'd actually throw up from fear after sometimes. So we stopped allowing her to watch scary movies.

Yeah totally, depends on the kid. So happy my niece/nephew are hip to it all being an illusion, I think it helped I always sat next to them as we watched the movies, me pointing out how they did every Tom Savini special effect.

Yeah, the one who's now 21 who got sick from watching them. She couldn't even watch MJ's Thriller video without being scared. I had to rent "the making of" from the video store to prove to her that it was all fake.

Does she get into horror movies at all these days? I know a fair number of adultified chicks (Not To Sound Sexist!) who are incapable of enjoying the genre whatsoever, as they get too spooked.

I introduced my fiance to the series a couple years ago by having her watch all the movies with me over a period of time. Thankfully she enjoys horror movies, so she liked most of them.  Grin

Most people I know don't care about these movies, and think I should change my movie tastes.
